Teaching
Global Citizenship
The
Josiah
Quincy
School
offers a vigorous academic program that also provides a window on the world. We
believe the best way to teach children is to engage their love of learning by
making them partners in their own education.
Workshops for excellence: Children
are taught reading skills through immersion in books, with a workshop-style
approach of independent reading, guided reading groups, and literature circles.
Our writing program not only lays down the rules of clear communication and
grammar but also encourages students to express themselves in a group setting.
In mathematics, an investigations approach leads students to discover concepts
on their own through exercises that use drawings and discussion.
A window on the
world:
Teachers instill within students the sense that they are part of a
global community. We believe it is our responsibility to prepare young people to
succeed in a world made more interconnected by advances in communications and
shaped by an economy that is truly global. Course work includes ongoing
discussions in the classroom of world affairs and issues affecting our planet. A
focus on computer skills begins in Kindergarten. Students are encouraged to
experience each other’s cultures, and languages are emphasized.
Mandarin program:
Mandarin Chinese, a language that is becoming more and more important, is taught
at all levels. Josiah Quincy is seeking to establish a dual language program in
which academic subjects are taught in Mandarin.
Art, Athletics, and
Programs to Enrich Lives
To nurture well-rounded students who believe in a world of
possibilities, the
Josiah
Quincy
School
stresses physical education and seeks to tap into the creative side of
children. Josiah Quincy offers programs in dance, music, and theater. Our
students are known for their theatrical productions and literary readings. The
school has a large swimming pool and maintains an extensive after-school
swimming program. Chinese gymnastics
and dance are unique offerings of our school. A soccer team is in the works.
Enrichment programs enliven the lessons of the classroom. These range from trips
to the nearby State House to see the democratic process in action, to
participation in such scientific activities as the robotic engineering program
at Tufts University .
