Eighth Grade Math

An exciting and challenging year awaits your 8th grade student. The Lyndon School, in accordance with the Boston Public Schools, uses the Connected Math curriculum to help students become strong problem solvers and gain a thorough conceptual understanding of topics in Algebra and Geometry. The following topics provide the focus for study:

Linear Relationships

Exponential Relationships

Right Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem

Quadratic Relationships

Algebraic Properties of Equality

Patterns, Combinations, and Permutations

These topics are very challenging and can only be mastered if students work hard and keep up with assignments and instruction. Student expectations for the course are as follows:

Arrive to Class Prepared

Participate in all Classwork Activities and Follow Directions

Complete and Hand in Homework on Time

Prepare for Unit Tests, District Tasks, MCAS

Ask for Help Before Falling Behind

Students’ grades will be calculated according to the following percentages.

Tests/Assessments 40%

Homework 30%

Classwork 20%

Participation 10%

Students and parents can check grades on-line any time at teacherease.com. If you are unable to access the website, you can request a grade report from me whenever you wish. Your student will use an on-line MCAS preparation program that is also accessible via the internet at studyisland.com. This program contains sample MCAS questions that students complete by topic at their own pace. The majority of the work will be done here in the Lyndon School computer lab, but students may practice from home as well.

I am available to help students after school and will be happy to speak with you about any academic or behavioral questions or concerns that you have regarding your student.
