Grade One Curriculum

Morning Work - As the students settle into the classroom each morning they work on a variety of tasks at their seats. These tasks may include reading, handwriting practice, math, and word study.

Morning Meeting - Students begin their day by coming together as a group. Morning Meeting includes a greeting, a morning message, an activity, and some time for sharing. Students sit at the rug in a circle and begin the meeting by reading the daily message, greeting one another, saluting the flag, talking and learning about the calendar, graphing the "question of the day", interviewing the "student of the day", and taking part in a variety of fun learning activities.

Literacy - During this time, students first work on the daily phonics lessons using the Bradley Language Arts Program. Students learn to encode and decode words as they learn about letters, sounds, words, and sentences. In addition they learn about language skills such as: compound words, contractions, use of punctuation, and spelling rules.

Readers' Workshop - The goal of Readers' Workshop in grade one is to provide students with the opportunities to develop the attitudes, understandings, and behaviors necessary for them to become life-long readers. During this time students receive direct instruction of reading skills and strategies. They work on a variety of literacy activities, participate in whole-group mini lessons, read independently, and they practice applying skills and strategies.

The reading program used for teaching these strategies is the Houghton Mifflin Basal Reading Series. During Readers' Workshop students also read leveled books in small, guided reading groups with the teacher. During guided reading, the children read at their instructional level. While students are reading in guided reading groups, the other students are reading independently, completing independent written assignments, or working with partners on a variety of literacy tasks (centers).

Math - The program used for formal math instruction this year is the Scott Foresman Math Series. In addition this series will be supplemented with the TERC Investigations program. Students also work on math in a variety of ways throughout the day using the "question of the day", the calendar, the schedule, math games, math journals, and written math reviews.

Writers' Workshop – The ultimate goal of the Writers’ Workshop in first grade is to provide daily writing opportunities for first grade children. Time is spent on:

whole class instruction (mini lesson),

children writing independently while the teacher is conferring, and

a whole class sharing of writing progress.

Social Studies - The curriculum for the students this year is "Living, Learning and Working Now and Long Ago, Near and Far". Through a literature-based approach, students will learn about their world starting with their home and their friends.  Later in the year they will learn about their community, city, state, country, and the world.

Science - Students will learn about weather, life cycles, and simple machines.
