Characteristics
- Accepts students from ages 3 to 7 in classrooms of 16 to 20 students.
- Enrolls 195 students who are African American, White, Asian, Hispanic and
from other cultures.
- Offers a full day from 7:30 AM to 5:00PM, consisting of a Day Program from
7:30 AM to 1:30 PM and an Afternoon Program from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
- Integrates multilingual, special needs and standard education students.
- Follows 4 school rules: Be safe, Be respectful, Be friendly, Be a good listener.

- Benefits from several partnerships, including: Boston University provides
Surround Care Program teachers, AM and PM classroom assistants, and literacy tutors;
Tufts University provides instructional guidance and student teachers; the YMCA
provides Physical Education instructors; Community Music School provides music
instruction; and Boston Partners in Education provides literacy volunteers.
Innovative Instructional Program
- Supports the development of oral language, critical thinking, reading and
writing skills and the exploration of mathematics, science and social studies.
- Offers programs in music, computer and physical education to enhance students'
development.
- Celebrates children's work through exhibitions and portfolios.
- Involves teachers' observations to guide their instructional program.
- Links academic content knowledge to children's creative and constructive
play.
- Promotes social and emotional development.
- Bases its instruction on the belief that children develop at different rates.
- Incorporates family, community and cultural knowledge into the classroom.
- Involves staff and families through in the creation of students' individual
education plans, and in the review of students' exhibitions and portfolios.
- Creates and modifies curriculum through an interactive process between university
partners, teachers, parents, and children.
- Promotes excellence in early childhood education by addressing the goals of
the National Association for Young Children and the Massachusetts Guidelines for
Preschool Learning Experiences.
